VIVA's Specials

Exciting and special river moments with VIVA Cruises

When the captain weighs anchor at the latest, that's when you start to feel at home - according to many of our guests, some of whom have been traveling the most beautiful rivers in Europe with us for several years. And a river cruise in winter is no exception: whether the tranquil nature of passing landscapes, the twinkling lights of the next town or the relaxed retreat to a cozy cabin after a day full of cultural discoveries: Look forward to exciting and relaxing river moments. Because both await you on our themed cruises in 2023.

For example, a short trip to the many cultural treasures of the Netherlands and Belgium - or something completely different: a crime thriller cruise to Berlin or Düsseldorf, where renowned authors will make you forget time and space with a murderous reading. Cast off and unwind on our wellness cruises, on the other hand, where an included massage awaits you on board the VIVA ONE from January to March.

City Highlights

Amsterdam is one of those cities that every traveler should visit at least once in their life. No wonder, millions and millions of tourists flock to the city on the canals every year to enjoy the flood of sights and cultural attractions. The best way to discover Amsterdam is on a boat trip along the canals or a walk along the unique canals. Art lovers will immediately be drawn to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum or the Van Gogh Museum. Party people will find their happiness in the nightlife and red light district De Wallen. And beer drinkers should not miss the Heineken Experience.

The oldest city in the Netherlands exudes authentic Dutch flair with its gabled houses, small cheese shops and delicacies on the "Grote Markt". Yesterday and today go hand in hand in the narrow streets. A visit to the Gothic St. Stevenskerk, including the burial cellar, and a stroll along the Lange Hezelstraat shopping street should therefore be on your sightseeing itinerary. Freshly fried kibbelingen in the wintry Kronenburgerpark are the perfect place to take a break afterwards.

You should definitely take advantage of the stopover in Utrecht to see this beautiful Dutch city at your leisure. Whether you visit the famous Centraal Museum of Ancient and Modern Art or prefer to discover the provincial capital on a leisurely canal cruise from the water - the historic architecture and the many lovingly restored houses will inspire you. In the middle of the city center, the landmark of Utrecht, the 112 m high Utrecht Cathedral, watches over the city. It was built between 1321 and 1382 and is the oldest and tallest church tower in the Netherlands. If you climb the 465 steps, you will be rewarded with a fantastic view. If you prefer a more tranquil pace, take a stroll through the alleyways and typical Dutch courtyards for which Utrecht is famous. Or how about a visit to the colorful flower market? Utrecht is always worth a visit.

The Dutch city of Dordrecht is a former trading town thanks to its location on the water. This past can still be felt in the town today. Be it in the historic city center, at the harbor or in one of the several museums. The "Grote Kerk" and the 13th century Augustinian monastery are also well worth a visit. A stroll through Dordrecht is the best way to discover the history of the town.

The port city of Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands and is one of the most interesting places in the world. Modern architecture plays a major part in this. The impressive sights include the horseshoe-shaped market hall with its huge range of goods and colorful hustle and bustle. Historical ships can be admired in the old harbor with its striking white house. The Witte de Withstraat shopping street is a great place to stroll, store and party. The futuristic-looking central station, the Tüte, also invites you to enjoy a pub crawl and go shopping.

Emmerich is located on the Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a beautiful Rhine bridge as well as the Eltenberg, its local mountain. There is also a Rhine promenade for walking and strolling. If you want to find out more about the art of coffee, you can visit the Museum of Coffee Technology, which is famous for the town of Emmrich. Nearby is the town of Kleve, which is also well worth a visit with its swan castle, zoo and historic gardens.

Maastricht is a university city in the far south of the Netherlands. The city is characterized by its medieval architecture and lively cultural scene. The cobbled old town is home to the Gothic St. John's Church (Sint Janskerk) and the Romanesque St. Servatius Basilica with its important collection of sacred art. The futuristic Bonnefanten Museum of Fine Arts is located on the banks of the Meuse, which flows through the city center.

Roermond is a city and municipality with 58,806 inhabitants in the Dutch province of Limburg, which lies on the border with Germany and close to Belgium. Roermond is best known for its Designer Outlet Center, where there are lots of special discounts on exclusive brands and selected clothing. The city center of Roermond is directly adjacent to the outlet center. Here you can take a relaxing stroll between small boutiques and quaint cafés.

Next to Roermond is the city of Venlo, which has 101,984 inhabitants, almost twice as many as the neighboring city. Small stores within the city center are perfect for a shopping trip. If you are looking for art and culture, you should visit the Limburgs Museum, which tells you a lot about the people and culture of Limburg. Another point of reference is the Oude Markt in the city center of Venlo, where you will find many restaurants that are especially recommended if you are craving a delicious wine in the sunny Netherlands.

Located in the province of Noord-Holland, Alkmaar in the Netherlands is also known as the cheese city of Holland. You should therefore plan a visit to the traditional cheese market as well as a tour of the cheese museum. Alkmaar also boasts a historic city center with plenty of shopping opportunities, cafés and restaurants. Alkmaar is easy to explore on foot. But an even nicer way is to take a tour along one of the canals, because like Amsterdam, Alkmaar is also known as a canal city. In a typical Giethoornse Punter, you can sail under the numerous bridges and have plenty of opportunity to discover the city's many monuments. Back on solid ground, we recommend a visit to the Beatles Museum in Alkmaar. In addition to the Cheese Museum, which provides an insight into cheese production, the Beatles Museum is another popular attraction in Alkmaar. If you still have some time left, you can take a bike ride to the nearby beach.

in the Netherlands

On this river cruise through the Netherlands, you will get to know three of the country's most beautiful and important cities. From Düsseldorf, you will first visit beautiful Amsterdam, the country's largest and most unique city. A boat trip along the world-famous canals of Amsterdam will leave you in awe. Enjoy the countless small canals with their picturesque bridges and magnificent town houses along the banks. With its world-famous art museums, such as the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam is also always worth a visit for art fans. The second stop on the trip is Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands and a modern contrast to historic Amsterdam. The highlight of a visit to Rotterdam is undoubtedly a harbor cruise, during which you will get to know the largest and busiest port in Europe. The third and final stop on your cruise through Holland is Arnhem. Although not as well known as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the capital of the province of Gelderland is still worth a visit. Fashionistas will love the numerous boutiques in the fashion district. And animal lovers will have a great day out at the country's most famous zoo, Burgers' Zoo.

This river cruise through Holland and Belgium takes you to three of the largest cities in the two Benelux countries. From Düsseldorf, you first head downriver to Amsterdam. The charm of the largest city in the Netherlands lies in its unique canal belt, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its historical significance. Discover the city's many narrow and crooked historic buildings by the water on a walk, bike or boat tour. From Amsterdam, continue your journey to Antwerp. The vibrant metropolis of Flanders combines history and modernity more harmoniously than almost any other city in Europe. Here, centuries-old buildings such as the Church of Our Lady, Steen Castle and the magnificent houses on the Grote Markt are combined with many examples of modern architecture, such as the Museum aan het Stroom. Here, old Flemish masters meet a very lively contemporary art scene in the city's art museums. And don't forget to try one of the hundreds of beers in Antwerp. Your river cruise through Holland and Belgium ends in modern Rotterdam. At the mouth of the Rhine into the North Sea, you will not only experience Europe's largest port, but also ultra-modern architecture and a very interesting gastronomic offer.

On this river cruise from Düsseldorf, you will get to know Belgium's two largest and most famous cities, Antwerp and Brussels. The first stop on the river cruise is Antwerp, where history and modernity meet in concentrated form. With the Church of Our Lady, Steen Castle, the houses on the Grote Markt and numerous other magnificent buildings, the old town of the Flemish metropolis is one of the most beautiful historical centers in Europe. Antwerp is one of the most dynamic metropolises in Western Europe, where time has not stood still. The second largest port in Europe, the largest diamond trading center in the world and a vibrant art and fashion scene make Antwerp a hotspot of modernity. The journey continues to Brussels - the capital of Belgium and Europe. Brussels also boasts a beautifully preserved historic old town, the centerpiece of which is the magnificent Grand Place with its medieval town hall. A visit to Brussels should also include a tour of the most important European political institutions. And of course, don't miss the opportunity to sample a chocolate or two at one of Brussels' world-famous chocolatiers. On the way back to Düsseldorf, you will visit Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands. The city's gabled houses and small shops exude a very special Dutch charm.

Or would you prefer a walk along the waterfront along the Graslei and Korenlei? The medieval city center of Ghent is without doubt one of the most beautiful old towns in Europe.
